We worked on a monumental “Albert Bierstadt” painting together. A huge challenge! It was improperly framed under a quarter inch plexiglass and installed on a moist brick outside wall. Given his knowledge of conservation, chemistry and the effects of a moist outside wall we were able to conserve, relocate and save the life of this extraordinary masterpiece. One of many.

In 2019, before the Covid pandemic, I had the good fortune to contact Arthur Kaliski and his late wife Millicent regarding a painting I wished to restore after it had been damaged during transportation. Like many of the paintings that I exhibited, this work was one that I would happily have hung in my own private collection. When Arthur and Millicent were finished, I was especially pleased, as the restoration had given the painting a new lease on life allowing me to exhibit it once more.

Several years later, I had a need to call on Arthur again when a great number of my paintings were damaged by flood water. Many of the paintings were works on paper and time was of the essence. Working against the clock, Arthur was able to stabilize a good portion of them and prevent the onset of mold. Without his knowledge, professionalism, and genuine interest in saving the paintings, a great deal more of them would have been lost.

In 2011, as a result of an inheritance, my wife and I received a number of water color paintings which, over the years with the original owner, had been very poorly taken care of…sun exposure, water damage, foxing, folding, etc. At that time, we knew the art needed expert attention, but did not know who was sufficiently technically skilled to undertake the restorations. Eventually we learned about Arthur Kaliski of East End Fine Art Restoration.

The first piece we gave him was a challenge. It was a watercolor by a Chinese artist. It had been tightly rolled into a very narrow tube which had evidence of ample water damage. Over a number of months, Arthur was able to extract the painting from the tube, repair physical damages to the paper, remove the water damage and bring the 8” x 42” painting of a stream back to its original beauty.

From that point on, over the next 10+ years, and as a result of his careful and excellent restoration work, we brought him, one by one, many other water colors. The most remarkable aspect of this work is that the details of many paintings were obscured with darkened surfaces. Arthur was able to bring life back to the paintings, and expose colors and details that we had never known to be present.

We now enjoy our restored art in a whole new way – delighted with the colors and features of the works that we had never seen before.
